Introduction – Complex or advanced surgery of the uterine cavity

The introduction to Module 3, Complex or Advanced Surgery of the Uterine Cavity provides a definition of the terms used and outlines the conditions and the procedures which are involved. This lecture addresses pregnancy-associated conditions involving caesarean section scars, misplaced intrauterine pregnancies, and retained placental remnants. The conditions leading to non-pregnancy-related abnormal uterine bleeding, such as endometrial polyps, fibroids (myomas), and adenomyosis are also addressed. The symptoms with which women present when they have such conditions are discussed, as well as the most useful and commonly undertaken investigations.  

The potential complications associated with complex and advanced hysteroscopic surgery are presented with particular emphasis on how they are avoided, recognized, and managed. Complications also include the ones that may occur during the procedure, as well as problems that may subsequently arise.

Consideration is given to the training required to be able to undertake such complex hysteroscopic procedures. The lecture is illustrated throughout with images taken by Dr. Mary Connor.&#x20;
